Castello di Amorosa

Nearly twenty years ago, I purchased the spectacular property upon which I built Castello di Amorosa. It sat on a hundred-seventy beautiful acres of forest and hills with a stream, a lake, one of the first houses built in Napa County and a great Victorian home where I chose to live. It was my dream property, culminating a search of many years. The purchase also came with a great building permit for a large winery building which had taken the previous owner thirteen years to obtain.

At first, I had no intention of starting another winery- I already had V. My plan was only to replant historic vineyards there. However, throughout my adult life, I had been fascinated with Italian medieval architecture; and, because of my passion- some would say obsession- I had already bought a handful of ancient properties in Italy, including a small castle near Florence now sold , a medieval monastery near Siena now being refurbished and a Medici palace in southern Tuscany, which we are remodeling into a period hotel.

You get the picture- it's an incurable malady. I was naive enough to think I was ready to begin. My plan was to incorporate all the ideas and details that I had assembled from my first trip to Italy in in my 8, square-foot winery. I would create a fantasy, a maze where every room and space opened into a new and different adventure as one traveled throughout the building. I would include all the elements of a true medieval castle- a moat and drawbridge, high walls and towers on a hillside, a great hall, courtyards and loggias, an apartment for the nobles, a big kitchen, an outdoor brick oven for baking bread, a church, a horse stables, secret passage ways and, of course, a prison and torture chamber.

Castello di Amorosa produces primarily Italian style wines while reflecting California's unique climate, soil and growing conditions. The majority of our red wine grapes are grown in the Napa Valley, while our white grapes are grown in the Carneros district of the Napa Valley or in the Anderson Valley in Mendocino County, as both of these cool areas are ideal for white wine grapes. Some grapes are also purchased from select growers. Located east of highway 29 and just 3 miles south of the city of Calistoga, our 30 acres of vineyards surrounding the Castello are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese and Primitivo.

Castello di Amorosa. Vidya Girish. We visited in February, so off season.. The guy at the tasting bar was really friendly and informative. This was our first wine tasting experience and we enjoyed it. We are glad we chose Castello because the whole family could enjoy the grounds and the walk round the castle. Ofcourse this is not an 'actual' medieval castle but till we visit Europe this will do: Amazing experience.

The tour and wine tasting The tour and wine tasting is excellent. They spared no expense in constructing the castle. From importing the stones from Italy to bringing in elements like the iron maiden this is a well thought out design. It is a completely different experience from any other winery and needs to be a must see when planning a trip to Napa. The wine is also very good. Take some time to enjoy this experience.

Jacquelyn Marks. I hate to give such a bad I hate to give such a bad rating, but I really didn't enjoy my time here. We had just came from Sterling Vineyards down the street, which I thought was so much better. We arrived to this really cool castle setting. The guy directs us to park against the grassy area. He directs the next guy to park so close to our rental. I was so thankful the guy in the car was very careful not hitting us.

We walk up to the castle, which had an incredible view. As you walk up, there are farm animals around like goats and roosters. It was cool. We finally get up to the tour area, where we can pay for our experience. Since the place was so busy, I felt like this took away from the experience itself. We went downstairs to the gift shop, where I purchased some things for my family. Someone greeted us in the gift shop, and guided us to our tasting area. The wine tasting area was in this dark cave-like setting almost.

It was really neat. However, there are no chairs, so you are standing the entire time. Like you are just standing against this bar. I felt like wine tasting took forever too. They kept switching the attendants, so it just took forever between each tasting. We got to taste five different wines, but probably could have cut a total of 30 minutes of just waiting for a new person to help us out.

When we walked around, it was hard to tell what was going on. Like each room was cool, but again it was so busy. For you to just stand there and take in the cool surroundings, it w Source: A Gandhi. The only reason to go to this The only reason to go to this place is to see the castle…if, you have never seen a castle before.

Look, I get it The reason is quite simple. The wine served here is absolute crap. If you're looking for great wine there are a number of others to prioritize. At the end of the day this place is a typical tourist trap, but maybe worth considering if you have a little ones that would appreciate seeing a castle, sheep and some chickens. I have tried to include a handful of pictures to give you an idea the only reason to consider this place. Terri Chube. Came in from Texas to visit family, Came in from Texas to visit family, this place was awesome!

Loved the castle, the sweet wines were great, took some home. The chocolate with it divine and Ivan was on point! Would definitely visit again. Brandon Wagner. The best part of this place is The best part of this place is the chickens and the goats. Obviously the castle and grounds are beautiful. Very commercialized set up. Definitely a tourist trap situation but a good experience overall. We didn't love the wines but our tasting session was pleasent.

Ashleigh Swanson. But the customer service sucks. The entire staff is snotty. Plus the tasting occur in the basement?! Go to Sterling across the street. You get a lot more for your money over there. Thomas Newman. Castle is awesome! Wines, not so much Wines, not so much. Be forewarned, this is a total tourist trap. But if you head in with the proper state of mind, it can actually be a fun visit. The castle is a sight to see, but you are limited in the areas you visit, unless you spring for a guided tour.

Staff quality is inconsistent, but trends towards aloof and occasionally rude. They say they sell their wine only at the castle. I'm guessing it's really because they haven't found a distributor willing to pick them up. Don't get suckered into joining their club, when there are far, far better wines in the area. Raymond Whitelockecrawford. Majestic facility - takes you back to Majestic facility - takes you back to the 13th century.

Aesthetically pleasing in that it offers visitors a span in time when castles and artwork collided.

Castello di Amorosa opened its doors to the public for the first time on Monday April 9, — this work of medieval architecture in the new world was conveived by long time Napa vintner Dario Sattui, owner of V. Sattui winery. This is an immense structure and down to the smallest detail, resembles a real medieval castle. Construction began in and lasted about 15 years with much of this time spent on the underground vaults and caves. We had the privilege of touring translation: If you would like to visit with the least amount of people, consider arriving on a winter weekday at am when they open.
